Empire of the sun

We LOVE Empire of the Sun music…BUT….we were disappointed that one of the band members didn’t show (and it was not mentioned at all even though apparent). Also there was a lot lip syncing and overdubbing https://empireofthesunofficialmerch.com/. Guitar was live…vocals were not. Costumes good and crowd was plentiful…Hollywood Bowl always a good time.

As Rolling Stone once observed, “Everything about Empire of the Sun is larger than life.” Ask That God continues that tradition, taking fans on a holistic musical adventure where the surreal reigns supreme. SPIN noted, “Ask That God’s production is tight and its message optimistic, with the aim of universal connectivity.” Billboard said, “Empire of the Sun shines with Ask That God.” GRAMMY.com declared, “Ask That God offers a chance to reflect on the blend of reality and imagination, while also evoking the radiant energy of their past songs.”

In terms of the latter, this song did not make the Hot 100 until 2016, almost a decade after its initial release. What caused it to finally catch on in America was its usage on a commercial for the Honda Civic.

As we have pointed out in the past, sometimes a pop song may be put into a romantic context even though the message it is intended to relay isn’t necessarily romantic in nature. And such is the case with “Walking on a Dream”. It definitely reads like the classic scenario where the singer is lacking in some regard, only to be saved from this condition by a newfound significant other, i.e. the addressee.

Craft Recordings and Jazz Dispensary kick off the new year in style with a heady cult favorite from Joe Henderson, 1973’s Multiple, cut from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI.

Since 2009 Littlemore has received medication to treat arthritis. From late 2009 Littlemore worked in Montreal, Canada with the Cirque Du Soleil as a composer and musical director for the touring arena show, Zarkana, which debuted on 29 June 2011 in New York. Pnau’s fourth album, Soft Universe, was recorded in London. Upon its release Mayes confirmed Littlemore and Steele were working on a second Empire of the Sun album. Littlemore expanded, “We just started writing two or three weeks ago in New York … Luke and I got into a studio, which was run by blind people – it was great. It’s good to be in weird places with Luke, we enjoy that. He has an extraordinary mind – it’s sounding so good”. As from July 2011, when not touring or performing, he lives in LA. During late 2011 Pnau toured through Australia promoting their album.

The duo’s first commercially available tracks were a pair of nine-minute tracks, “Frisk” and “Anthropophagi”, that led off doof@cybersonic.aust.com – an underground acid trance compilation album distributed by cult electronic label Creative Vibes in 1996. Pnau would then feature on another Creative Vibes project, 1998’s compilation record Evolutionary Vibes III: The Evolution Will Not Be Televised, with the song “Discone”.

Ask That God received a score of 82 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on five critics’ reviews, which the website categorised as “universal acclaim”. Record Collector stated that “while their familiar stargazing disco again dominates, the songwriting is at its sharpest as fresh influences add bite”. Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic wrote that it “feels like both a return to form and a retrospective journey through their sonic evolution” and a “return to the blissful, body-moving spirit of Empire of the Sun’s first two classics”.

Pnau formed in Sydney, New South Wales by Littlemore and Mayes. The two met at secondary school at the age of 12 and began performing together in the mid-1990s, initially playing acid, house music, and trance music. Littlemore recalled meeting Mayes when he was 10; “He tripped me over. We hated each other for a couple years and then we started sneaking out and going to raves when we were about 13 and we formed a bond over intense music.” Littlemore and Mayes created their first album when they were in their mid-teens. “It was called Fractal Geometric Spaces Made of Light,” Littlemore remembers, “Which is probably why it was never picked up.”

The new project began to develop under the working title of “Steelemore” as a collaboration between Steele and Littlemore, with Pnau partner Peter Mayes listed as a producer and occasional co-writer. As Steele was living in Perth and Littlemore was in Sydney the two spent time writing songs separately while meeting occasionally in Sydney to decide on the musical direction and style. When they had accumulated enough material Mayes and duo began to record the album throughout 2007 with the assistance of Jonathan Sloan.

To promote Pnau internationally, Littlemore and Mayes travelled to London. In December 2007 Elton John heard Pnau’s “Wild Strawberries” – the lead single from the album – while in Sydney for the Australian leg of his Rocket Man Tour. After hearing the whole album John contacted Littlemore to encourage him. Pnau returned to Australia in January 2008 to perform at Big Day Out and met John who signed the duo with his United Kingdom-based management. Pnau then relocated to London more permanently, both Littlemore and Mayes worked with John. Littlemore and Mayes established a recording studio in London and worked as record producers.

Apart from being a member of Pnau, Littlemore also appears as one half of the project Empire of the Sun. In November 2016, the new line-up released “Chameleon”, the first single from their album Changa.
